About this Event
This multi-lesson class is for the student who wishes to experience the acting process from beginning to culmination. Scenes will be assigned and remain the same in all three sessions. Memorization is not required, but you may find it is helpful.
Part I – The Audition and Making Choices Friday, April 8th 6:30-8:30 PM
There are an abundance of decisions to be made in order to have a successful audition; everything from personal presentation and what assets to showcase to making clear and focused character choices that serve the scene but still are uniquely you. The first class will outline what to expect with an in-person audition and provide advice that will also apply to self tapes.
Part II – The Callback and Incorporating Notes Saturday, April 9th 1:00-3:00
One of the hardest tasks an actor faces is maintaining a consistent truth while remaining flexible enough to accommodate direction and what other actors offer. In this class, you will be working with a scene partner to find ease and comfort no matter what you’re handed to work with and the ability to make new choices while still keeping a consistent character. We will discuss “chemistry” and creating relationships with those we work with, both in front of the camera and behind it.
Part III – On Set Sunday, April 10th 10:00-12:30
Very little of acting work is actually acting. This class is focused on the nuts and bolts of getting around on a set. We include blocking, finding your light, creating believable performances when your scene partner is suddenly a little blue piece of tape, etc. We will discuss how to keep a reading fresh when you have to say it twenty-five times, how a master is shot different from an extreme closeup and what can we do to make sure we take advantage of each opportunity. In this class, I hope to fast-track you through some of the things I had to learn by making mistakes. (Don’t put a huge bite of pizza in your mouth and start chewing. Trust me on this.)
Kim Rhodes is best known for her television roles as ultra-mom Carey Martin on Disney Channel’s “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” and the intrepid Jody Mills on CW’s “Supernatural”, where she survived for ten years. She has been passionately despised for her brief but eventful tenure as Linda Barnes on “Criminal Minds” and had a glorious appearance as the first Kobali, Ensign Lindsay Ballard, on “Star Trek: Voyager”.
Kim graduated Summa Cum Laude from Southern Oregon (now) University with a BFA in acting and then completed the MFA program at Temple University in Philadelphia. She spent many happy years doing regional theater in places like the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon and American Player’s Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin. She also worked in a veterinary clinic and has neutered a cat.
She currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband, daughter, and numerous pets. She resists all advice and risks her spinal column on an almost daily basis due to her passion for riding horses and teaching the love to youngsters.
